MCG Reports

Opportunities for Rear Projection Monitors
by Charles McLaughlin | chuck@mcgweb.com | Telephone: 650 323 7155

___________________________________________________

The world needs a better and cheaper computer monitor. AMLCD flat panel enthusiasts certainly think they have a better mousetrap, but it certainly won't be cheaper. A large (20 to 30 inch) very high definition (UXGA) monitor based on the CMOS backplane miniature imagers could be both better and cheaper. But is it a near term possibility?

A new report by McLaughlin Consulting Group will examine the technical and commercial feasibility of a rear projection monitor. Two monitor products will be examined. A high performance 24 inch UXGA full color video capable desktop monitor at a $2,000 price point, and a high volume 17 inch equivalent XGA monitor targeted at a street price of $500.

The system performance and price targets will be used to derive specifications and bill of materials costs fro the key monitor subsystems: miniature imagers, lamp and power supply, collection and projection optics, and screen. The analysis will compare the performance and price of current commercial and near term promised components to the targets and assess the likelihood and timing of success.
