Stephen Elliott Marsland
Stephen Elliott Marsland 53, died unexpectedly in San Bruno, CA, on August 18, 2008.
He was born in Port Chester, NY, on March 14, 1955, the son of Amy Marsland and the late William D. Marsland of Greene, NY. He attended Greene Central School, where he was valedictorian and a member of the track team. He was also valedictorian of his class at Cornell, and attended the Cornell School of Industrial Relations and Harvard Business School.
He was a rotary exchange scholar to Japan and became fluent in speaking, writing and reading Japanese. Later he held various posts in the business field. He was division manager for Tru Vue and a vice president of Raychem, later purchased by Tyco. Most recently he has been senior partner of the McLaughlin Consulting Group. In that capacity he frequently worked as go-between for American and Japanese businesses.
He was a Japan Society fellow and has written a number of Harvard Business School studies as well as a book, The Birth of the Japanese Labor Movement. In the 1990s he ran for state assembly in California an the Libertarian ticket.
He is survived by his wife, Svetlana and stepson, Nick; former wife, Mary Anne Saverio Marsland and daughter, Stephanie Angeline of Burlingame, CA; former wife, Yaeeko Ogawa Marsland and son, Robert Ichiro of Cupertino, CA. Also survived by two brothers, David Marsland of Greene and Adam Marsland of Reseda, CA; two sisters, Alicia (Eugene) Geromel of Swartz Creek, MI, and Judy Wright of Bon Aqua, TN; several nieces and nephews; and his mother, Amy Marsland of Greene, NY.
